Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on this. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in market values of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
