Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
